Hierarchy of Levels for Accurate Speech Sound Development in Speech Therapy



Step 1: Sound level production/establish placement

a)      Establish accurate articulatory placement for sound production in isolation
         (e.g., say “sss…”)

Step 2: Word level production

a)      Initial position of words (e.g., “saw”)

b)      Final position of words (e.g., “dress”)

c)       Medial position of words (e.g., “messy”)  

Step 3: Sentence level production

a)      Initial position of words in sentences (e.g., “I saw the movie over the weekend”)

b)      Final position of words in sentences (e.g., “Can I where my dress to the party?”)

c)      Medial position of words in sentences (e.g., “My room is kind of messy today!”) 

Step 4: Discourse level production

a)      Initial position of words in discourse   

b)      Final position of words in discourse

c)       Medial position of words in discourse

Step 5: Naturalistic/Spontaneous production

a)      Initial, medial and final word position of words in structured spontaneous
         speaking opportunities           

Step 6: Fully generalized productions

a)      Use across all word positions in everyday speaking situations
